I tried the deepl api to translate some feeds into Swedish but a 800 word article used 30k Deepl API chars. Seems loads and will get expensive if translating several articles a day, I thought it would use something like 7-8 chars per word on average. Any idea if its some bug or if its correct?

When translating an article, you should be aware that you are translating the following parts of the article

  1. The post title.
  2. The post content.
  3. The post excerpt.

Also, don't forget that you're translating the HTML pages, not just the raw text, since you want the translated page with the original formatting, right? So apparently DeepL counts all the HTML tags and their elements as words. E.g.:

It's not a flaw in the plugin, it's the way DeepL works. You can reduce the number of processed words.

1. You can limit the size of post excerpts.

2. You can remove HMTL tags from your post excerpts and use %post_content_notags% and %post_excerpt_notags% instead of %post_content% and %post_excerpt% shortcode in your post templates.

3. You can combine all these methods, like using and %post_content_notags% and %post_excerpt_notags[50]% in your post templates.
